How is that any better?!

I'm going nuts! I hate it when I try out for something and I put ALL this detail into the base and coloring. Then other people enter with maybe a few key shadows or some shadows with a few round circles of highlights....and they WIN! Yes some bases are better than mine but how is simple shading better?! Doesn't detail and quality count?
